Luft Construction Company, Inc. got its beginning in April of 1972. Over the years we have had the privilege to work on many interesting and diversified projects. Thank you for taking the time to read about our company. Afterwards, please take a few moments to browse our portfolio of project photographs and stories.
A Variety of Structures
For one project, we were called in to see if it were possible to remove the corner stone of a historic library.
The corner stone weighed more than one and a half tons and measured nearly 3 ft. by 4 ft. More than a hundred years ago, the stone had been hollowed out and a copper time capsule placed inside. We devised a way to slide the stone out, retrieve the time capsule, replace it with a new time capsule, and place the large corner stone back in the original position. All this without any impact on the building.
Another interesting historic project was the Hudson/Athens lighthouse restoration. With no means to set up tubular scaffolding, it became necessary for us to come up with an alternate means of being able to reach the 50 ft. high brick walls. Using ropes a pulleys attched to an upper support ring, we worked on the building suspended in mid-air like spiders. We have also constructed compound-curved stone walls which followed the curve of the road while at the same time also arching vertically. Fireplace and Chimney Construction and Restoration
Over the years, we have had a hand in a large variety of fireplace and chimney projects. We have enjoyed building many modified Rumford fireplaces, and have built six-sided stone fireplaces and chimneys. In some cases, we have built fireplaces 20 ft. apart on the first level, that join together in a single common chimney coming out from the middle of the house.
On one chimney, the bottom 20 feet had decayed and given way, yet the upper 60 feet of the chimney was still in very good condition. So we jacked up and supported the upper 60 feet, removed the bottom of the chimney and replaced the damaged 20 feet to restore the chimney to its original state. Many old Inns (200 to 300 years old) have their original fireplaces which do not work well or have been sealed up due to their unsafe condition. We have restored many of these back to safe working order. There is always a sense of satisfaction in taking a fireplace which has not felt the warmth of embers for quite some time and seeing it filled with large leaping flames. |
